Today is the birthday of Frankie Valdez, a young Mexican-American boy who lives with his family in San Francisco's Mission District. Frankie's mother brushes his hair as he gets ready for school with his other brothers and sisters. On the school bus, Frankie sits with his best friend, Martin Martinez. Once at school, Frankie studies math and English, he plays kickball during P.E. and watches a film about mammals in science class.
After school Frankie returns home to do his homework and help his mother prepare the food for his party. He spends some time at the local Boy's Club with his brother, Gabriel, before the big moment comes and his birthday party gets underway, with friends and family present and plenty of Mexican food and music on hand.
Fran Ortiz's intimate black-and-white photographs allow us to follow Frankie through this special day. In addition to her story of Frankie's birthday, Tricia Brown also includes a glossary of the Spanish words that appear throughout her book. Young readers learning about other cultures are sure to appreciate their visit with Frankie and his family.
